Learning History

Ive been in Moab attending the Outerbike festival since last week, and its been a pretty full week! It started with a showing of the MTB movie ‘Klunkerz’ at the Star Hall in downtown Moab. A fun and very informative film about the origins just 3 short decades ago of what today is a several billion dollar industry. I recommend this movie for anyone curious about how it all began-

One of my main passions the last decade has been mountain biking, its one of the few things that I derive pure joy from doing and being a part of. From climbing that last 500’ of technical ridge line above Anchorage to advocacy work for a new bike lane in downtown Aberdeen, I have found being involved in all aspects of this sport to be very rewarding. In 20 minutes of hiking you can cover more ground than the average American walks in a week, no really, Im not making this up. For 95 percent of all trips outside the home, for whatever distance or purpose, Americans get into a car. Considering all types of walking- car to office, office to car, around the supermarket, shopping malls and video store, etc. the average American walks 1.4 miles a week. That’s barely 350 yards a day. Thats ridiculous. Obesity ranks where among our nations health problems? Get a clue…
