Saturday was National Trails Day. I hooked up with about 30 other volunteers under the
guidance of Singletrack Advocates here in Anc and spent about 3 hours de-rutting the STA trails on the hillside. Riders who are a bit too anxious have ridden the trails before they have had sufficient time to dry out from the snow pack of winter. This leaves ruts in the trail tread that need to be fixed at the beginning of every summer.. There really is no way of stopping them except to ask nicely, or not-so-nicely but either way there will always be some who ride the muddy trails anyway. I have been doing a little trail work on a small network of trails out in West Anc in my spare time. Not a big network but enough that is fun to ride and it is right off of the Coastal Trail and in a scenic part of town. The area is of a Moraine nature where the land seems as if its been folded, or ‘scrunched up’, creating a lot of ridges with small ponds in between them. Routing trails that wind around on top of these ridges has been fun and the riding although there is no elevation gain really can be a bit challenging. I have gained access to a few specialty pallets that are just under 3 ft wide by 12 feet long; Score. This morning I carried one of these sections out into the area and installed it over a small wetland spot in the main trail. The ground right here is always muddy and continued riding through it just makes a mess out of the trail. Im afraid that the Municipality will close off the area completely if they see how big of a mess this can be. Locals have been laying whatever boards they have found in the hole for the last decade it seems with not much succsess but with any luck this new bridge will negate the need for that for quite some time.
